This is BMW’s first M cars- built between 1978-1981, BMW only produced 456 example of this hand built mid-engine sports car. Powered by an M88 3.5 liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine producing 273hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels by a 5-speed manual gearbox and is good for a 0-100 km/h in 5.4sec (not bad for a 36-year-old car) and a top speed of 260 km/h.
This particular M1 has just one owner since new, a former journalist who happened to be invited to Germany by BMW to purchase one of the last supercars produced. During his career, the car has been to almost every continent and many dealerships. The car has been to New Zealand, Mexico, South Africa, Arizona, and finally settling down in Miami.
The car is finished in a rare dark blue colour (1 of 58 painted in this colour) and is bone stock with an exception of an aftermarket 1980’s Blaupunkt Speaker system installed. The car has all its original papers are in order including period placards, cars show placards, old registration stickers, and original Pirelli tires.
The car has only 13 000 km on the clock, and in that rare blue colour looks pretty special. With a price tag of R8.3M, you can buy a 991 Porsche 911 Turbo S, 2017 R8 V10, and a 2017 BMW M750Li combined. Is it worth it? We think it’s definitely worth it. It’s in prestine condition, and it’ll definitely appreciate over the years. It’s a piece of BMW history (the first mid-engined BMW).
